The Reclaimed Creative

I truly believe there is a 'creative' in all of us.

Take, as an example these sisters: They are young, with no 'formal' training of what creativity should look like...

... yet they have managed to come up with some of the craziest AND coolest ideas for pictures.
(You can check out their story here, and their blog here).

The thing is that from the day we're born we tend to sway one way or the other. Or so we're told. They tell us that if we are good at math, we're probably not good in something that requires creativity. Or that if we're so creative, math is probably not our strongest quality. And we believe it:

"Creative people are only those who can draw, paint, create music, or come up with crazy cool ideas that we support, but are quietly bitter about, because we simply wish we had come up with it."

WRONG.

If we really take the time too look into these people's creative spirit we might discover something deeper: Although talented, these people took the time to develop these qualities we so attribute to innate talent. The truth is that we can all learn from them, and we can all learn how to be creative, in our own way.

Psychology Today states that creativity "has been pegged to conducive environments, perfect collaborators, personality traits, serendipity, and even spiritual muses." Creativity breaks the barrier of art. It encompasses the way we think and solve problems. The way we confront others, deal with conflict, and even the way we approach our day-to-day tasks can be highly affected by our creativity.

Here's a definition from Dictionary.com that does justice to the term we tend to distort in our minds: "Creativity: the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination."

Look at creativity as you would a plant: It requires a seed, the right environment to grow in, the right nutrients, and it will bear fruit. All of us have the seed in us - if you think about it, when you were little and were given water colors, you wouldn't stop to think whether you had the talent to create something with those tools, would you? You just took them, and created, on your own. The seed is there, it is innate. The degree of the talent is something that depends on us, our time, our dedication, and instruction.

So this is what this blog is all about. It is dedicated to breaking the myth that creativity is only for artists and musicians. To those who yearn for creativity but don't know where to get it from. To those who want to reclaim their creative spirit, renew their courage, and create something. To those who maybe want to relive those carefree childhood years, in which creativity remained personal, beautiful, and un-judged, no matter what type of form such took.
